They say “two heads are better than one”, but Oda Design Lab would prove that three heads are, in fact, better than just one - or even two. It is great to work with your best friends, but when they share the same absolute interests the flow will just naturally grow.

That’s how the architects Kübra Kaçtıoğlu Sevim, 33, Zeynep Karaer, 33, and Kübra Avcılar, 33 founded their business together in September 2020. “ODA was created by friends and nearly middle-aged three women who do not want to postpone their irrepressible dreams”, they tell The Dank Project.

So many dreams and creative minds go on with endless thoughts. Deciding what would fit all their desires to create, the three friends have decided to come up with a design lab, where they won’t have any sort of limitations on what they want to do. “We didn’t want to restrict ourselves with neither one design segment nor one material. We feel brave to design something new and independent of other materials and so on.”

So many different creative paths to follow could get challenging you might think, but Kübra Kaçtıoğlu ensures mutual respect keeps them going strong. “Sometimes it is challenging but it is mostly like clockwork: we complete each other on the way.”

Initially they have decided to use their architectural background and inspiration to create decor objects based with Jesmonite, a composite material that consists of a gypsum-based material in an acrylic resin.

“After the designing process, we fabricate the molds on a 3D printer. Finally we use these molds to produce the objects from scratch. Sanding and varnishing objects are the last steps and all of those steps are made together and inside our room.”

“Room” is also the name of the brand itself. “Oda” means “room” in Turkish, and the name comes from the essence of never forgetting where they started.

“We have literally started to work in Kübra Kaçtıoğlu’s 10 square meters room in her flat, and we choose ODA as a brand name to always remind us where we started.”

Besides caring about the process, the choice of material also came from the will to produce eco-friendly objects. “We are using Jesmonite because it is easy to create and it allows us to recycle. It is water based, not solvent based. In an effort not to use animal products, we produce in a way that causes the least harm to nature.”

In an attempt to grow their brochure of products and continue to experiment new shapes and products, they started to also produce hair clips. “We want to put on more effort on developing experimental design practices. We are planning to come together with more ODA people beyond borders.”

ODA stylish and sustainable decor objects can be found on their official website. For the moment, you can purchase there for deliveries in Turkey only, but the trio promises to soon have worldwide delivery from their main page as well.
